The city council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife opened today the new premises of the composting plant located at the local nursery (Vivero Municipal) with a ceremony attended by mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, the representative of the central government on the Canary Islands, Maria del Carmen Hernandez Bento, and the councilor Head of the Department of Public Services Damaso Arteaga. The purpose of this new infrastructure, which has a total area of 559 square metres, will be to process plant residues coming from parks and gardens of the capital city through the use of controlled microbial composting (CMC). The works, performed by the company OHL, following the project of Teno Ingenieros, had a budget of 800,000 euros, implemented within the framework of the 2010 Local Investment State Fund. The premises have a video surveillance system to reinforce security as well as a new perimeter fence. Local technicians intend to carry out five or six compost production cycles per year, as the CMC process lasts about six to eight weeks.
