“The works were successfully executed and completed and they are aesthetically striking”. These were the words that the president of the government of the Canary Islands, Mr. Paulino Rivero, used to define the new Garachico marina and fishing port. The works will be finished in April but the port will become operational as from June since some extra time is required to sign up for electricity supply and to transfer and install a harbour crane to remove vessels from the water and take them to their beaching point in the dyke. Mr. Rivero made these statements during a visit to the site, where he was able to check up on the execution of the works, consisting in the rounding-off works on the piers and the beautification of the infrastructure, as well as the performance of underwater inspections to check the correct state of the slopes. The port, he pointed out, “will allow for improved communications, will offer major possibilities to the fishing sector in the North of the island and will contribute to a better economy and to a more dynamic region.” Garachico port, the works of which started early in 2009, is today a reality. It basically comprises a 630-metre long dyke and a counter-dyke of more than 137 metres long. Within the sheltered area there are two docks (marina and fishing) split by a central 80-metre long dyke.
